What this is about

The idea

SkookumView is an ongoing story of an over-traditional-age father bonding with his son.

When I was young, I spent hours with my grandfather and cousin building a rock wall and fixing up an old cabin. Those were great times and this is an effort to provide something similar for Wylie.

About the name

While laying in front of the fireplace, my grandfather would tell us stories about an old-time prospector known as Skookum Joe. Skookum, we were told, meant “good,” as Joe was described as a decent man who disappeared each summer into the mountains, returning each fall with enough gold to live out the winter and obtain a “grubstake” for the following summer. Skookum Joe was, apparently, well liked and easy going. I don’t know what finally happened to him, but his gold mine was never found. Or so goes the family legend.

Later, I found that Skookum means “Strong” or “Monstrously significant,” but I think that “Good” is also implied.
