After a nice break with a kayak and backpacking trip, progress continues at Skookum. The usual summary follows.
Mark, Nash, Logan, and Randi spent a day at Skookum and made some positive additions. A new broom, a new ax, and best of all, a new table with a chess board and cribbage board built in. Above, Wylie is starting to sand the new table, which we will eventually finish. A perfect table for the cabin!
Meg and Wylie came up for a day that was mostly spent on installing wainscoting. Wylie got into it, helping cut the insulation (left photo above) and also putting in the screws through the tin to hold it in place (right photo above).
I spent a full day grinding and sanding the logs, an ugly, dusty, nasty job. The left photo shows the logs before sanding, and the right photo shows the logs after most of the sanding was done. The logs clean up well and should look great after finishing. I am guessing I have about 3 more days of sanding.
I used a “flopper” grinding wheel for the first pass on the logs, which took off most of the material. Then I followed up with fine-grit sandpaper on a palm sander, which make the logs nice and smooth. The only major problem, besides the dust, was the grinder wheel is stuck on my grinder, so I have to figure out how to get it off before next steps.
Jason Heath came up and installed the stove, a HUGE step! The left photo shows Jason using a sawzall to cut the opening for the chimney. The middle photo shows the chimney opening from the top of the roof, and the right image shows the installed chimney. Jason has been working with wood stoves for years and got everything done, and to code, in about 4 hours, a job I’m sure would have taken me days. Thank you so much Jason!!!
Above is a photo of the installed stove — I really like it! With the sanded logs behind, you get a feel of how the inside of the cabin will look when finished.
Looking good!
