Another week and more progress. Some time ago I made loose arrangements to put up the solar systems and install the wood stove in July… and now it looks like neither of those will happen. I can still get the cabin ready for winter, but it’s going to take work later on, probably September or so. Otherwise, steady progress.
Both gables are now framed and sheeted. I have bought spray-on insulation that will be fairly thin but should seal things up tightly. After that I’ll put in standard bat insulation.
With Meg’s help, I tried out my home-made “window hauler” with the door first, and it rode solidly all the way. The first time we installed the door it was too tight, but with just a little trimming it went in well. Wylie and I later hauled up a couple of solar panels with the “window hauler” and we have them stored behind the cabin.
Wylie and I got started on the wainscoting, which will be a 3 foot section of rusted tin all the way around the base of the cabin. The left photo shows the wall just south of the main door as we were putting in some simple framing. Last year I ordered way to much under-grade insulation, so I decided to use it as extra insulation for the stem wall behind the wainscoting. The middle picture shows the insulation in place. The picture farthest to the right shows the wainscoting installed. It comes in 10 foot sections, and we only got one section up, but even with my poor installation I think it will add a rustic touch and work well.
After hauling up the door and then a couple of solar panels, I felt ready to try the windows. The left photo shows Tim with the two biggest windows on the “window hauler” at the cabin, no problems. The right photo shows the big window installed on the east wall of the cabin. This is the biggest window and I really like the way it came out!

I like the progress, slow and steady but always going forward. Keep it up.
