Much got done this week — all the solar panels are on the roof; most of the wainscoting is up; and the ugly, terrible, rotten job of sanding the logs is done! Photos of the work are shown below as usual.
Meg and Wylie came up to help one day that was spent mostly on wainscoting, and then Wylie came up with me on another day when we worked on the wainscoting. Wylie did a great job cutting and fitting the foam insulation and also screwing on the tin.
We worked our way around the stack of cement on the East wall to get the wainscoting in below the big window (left photo), and then finished up the North wall (right photo). There is only one more 10-foot roll of wainscoting to put up, and by my measurement, there is a 10-foot and 3-inch gap left to cover. Classic…
All the logs are sanded, which took just over 3 long, hard days wearing a respirator, goggles, and ear protection. I used an angle grinder first, and then followed up with a palm sander so the logs are nice and smooth, which should help with cleaning in the future. This was a miserable job and I’m glad to be done with it! I’ve already taken out three 5-gallon buckets of sawdust and there’s still plenty of sawdust left. The left photo shows the South wall, the middle photo shows the North wall, and right photo shows the West wall.
I used the angle grinder to smooth up the table put together by Mark and clan, and then Wylie used the palm sander to finish it up. The sanding removed the black squares on the chess board, so Wylie is coloring them in. Once he has the chess board ready we will finish it with the same clear coating that will go on the logs.
Owen, with only a little help from me, got all the solar panels up. The hot-water panels are plumbed in (you can see the plumbing on the back side of the dark panels), but the full system is not yet hooked up to the hot water tank. The Photo-Voltaic (PV) panels are also up (white backs in the photo to the right), but are also not hooked up. Getting the panels up is a HUGE step and was a job where Owen’s knowledge was essential to getting it done.
The photo above shows all the solar panels mounted on the roof. The left two panels are for heating water, and the panels on the right (4 in total) are for generating electricity. Another big step!

Wow, it looks like things are really coming together. Great work, and I’m impressed with the progress.
