October 9 2026

Summer has continued into Ocober with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s. Supposedly, snow is coming soon, so I may have made my last drive up to Skookum this year. I hope so — we can use the snow! The spring has been dry for a month, but the cistern has plenty of water. Recently, most of the work has been devoted to the shed and getting materials up so I can make progress after the snow flies.

I finished the shed roof and put Zip tape on the seams. You can see the rope I slung over the top for safety. This turned out to be a good thing because while I was on the roof the wind blew down the ladder. I was able to lasso the ladder and put it up, thereby avoiding an uncomfortable jump or a body-bely rappel.

Most of the wainscoating tin is installed and gravel is piled up about 6 inches to discourage varmits from digging underneath. I doubt that will work, but it’s a shot.

The south end of the shed will be a sauna. There’s much left to do, but I have (hopefully) hauled up all the materials necessary.

There’s a nice stack of firewood on the porch that should easily last the winter. Also, in preparation for the cold, the waterlines are drained, antifreeze is in the goosenecks, batteries are in the cellar where they will stay warm, the fridge is unplugged, and food items that might freeze and break have been removed. Let it snow!

  1. I don’t think I have ever seen the porch so clean; almost no construction materials and LOTS of firewood. I expect that table will be a permanent fixture on the porch, and it works there. I hope you can get the sauna operational before the spring thaw, and expect you will.
